Toyota, Mazda, Mercedez-Benz Issue Recalls, NHTSA Says

September 30, 2024

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling over 42,000 U.S. vehicles over loss of power brake assist that can extend the distance required to stop, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday.

The recall affects certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. The agency flagged a software error in the electronic control unit that manages the vehicle during skidding, which could result in loss of braking assistance when turning a corner.

A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required for vehicle to stop, which increases the risk of a crash.

Mazda is recalling 77,670 sports vehicles in the U.S. over a software error that may cause the front airbags to deploy with excessive force in a crash, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday.

The recall involves some MX-5 Miata vehicles from model years 2016-2023.

Dealers will update the air bag sensor control module software for free, the NHTSA said.

Stellantis’ Fiat also recalled a little over 15,000 vehicles of its 124 Spider model, which is based on the same platform as the Miata, for the same concern on Wednesday.

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling more than 27,000 vehicles due to a potential risk of the engine control unit (ECU) software causing the engine to overheat or stall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday.

The recall includes certain Mercedes and Maybach S580 luxury sedans from years 2021-2023.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash and an overheated engine can increase the risk of a fire, the auto safety regulator said.

Dealers will update the ECU software free of charge after the respective owners are notified.
