Drone Registry Task Force to Report on Saturday

November 20, 2015

The Federal Aviation Administration task force working on establishing a new drone registry for operators will be reporting its recommendation on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The recommendations had been expected on Friday.

Speaking to the task force of private sector and government representatives two weeks ago, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta asked the group to provide guidance on a streamlined and simple unmanned aircraft registration process. It should includes rules on which types of unmanned aircaft would need to be registered and which would not, he said.

Huerta has said the system should be simple enough that operators will not need to pay a third party to register them. The system would be similar to registering any newly purchased product with its manufacturer as well as a minimum weight for unmanned aircraft that must be registered, according to the FAA.

Administration officials have said they hope to have the registry up and running before Christmas, when as many as 1 million new drones could be given as gifts.
