Report: More Insurers in California Paying Wildfire Victims Without Itemized List

March 7, 2025

More insurers are paying contents coverage to California wildfire victims without requiring a detailed inventory, according to the California Department of Å˽ðÁ«´«Ã½Ó³».

The CDI reported on responses from carriers following a notice issued by California Å˽ðÁ«´«Ã½Ó³» Commissioner Ricardo Lara in February requesting insurers with policyholders impacted by the recent fires in the Los Angeles area to provide up to 100% of contents coverage limits without requiring insureds to submit a detailed inventory of their personal property.

According to the CDI, the majority of homeowners insurance companies agreed to provide at least 75% of contents coverage without a detailed inventory, including some who agreed to provide 100% of coverage limits. The CDI has released information like this in the past, including following the 2018 and in 2019 wildfires in Northern and Southern California.

The CDI is requesting each insurer notify policyholders of the new amounts they will provide without inventory, along with coverage terms and exceptions.

Lara is also sponsoring Senate Bill 495, the Eliminate the List Act, authored by Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica). The bill is intended to require insurers to pay wildfire survivors 100% of their contents coverage without requiring a detailed inventory. The bill would also grant consumers at least 180 days to provide proof of loss to their insurance company following a declared state of emergency. The bill is pending referral to a legislative policy committee for hearing.
