Charleston’s chief building official on Feb. 27 instructed residents of the upscale Dockside condominiums to “urgently evacuate” while engineers assess the 19-story building and the probability of a collapse, according to the Post and Courier and other news .

That came two days after an engineering firm, the same one hired by the Champlain Towers condo association after the 2021 collapse, told the Charleston condo board about structural concerns. Other concerns at the Charleston condo were identified two years ago, news sites reported. Many buildings were assessed after the Florida collapse, which killed 98 people. One structure in Charleston, known as the Peoples Building, was evacuated in August 2024, due to structural concerns and water intrusion.

Charleston officials have given the engineering firm a March 14 deadline for reports on the safety of the Dockside condo building.
