Florida DFS Posts Latest Enforcement Actions Against Agents, Adjusters

By | December 27, 2024

Florida’s Department of Financial Services has posted its enforcement actions for much of the last half of 2024, listing 12 insurance agents and 43 adjusters who were penalized, suspended, or had their licenses revoked or voluntarily surrendered them.

From June through November, the department reported 192 enforcement actions, a pace that’s slightly higher than what was seen in the second quarter of the year. Most actions this summer and fall were taken against life and health insurance agents, but public adjusters came in second in the number of actions.

“Notification of enforcement actions is in the public interest,” DFS said in a statement.

Officials noted that the listing, posted periodically, does not reflect pending appeals or hearings. Some of the actions were the result of settlements that were finalized with a department order.

One of the best-known property-casualty insurance agents to be disciplined is Reid McDaniel, a North Fort Myers agency owner who was suspended in September. A month before, the 33-year-old McDaniel made headlines around the state when he was charged with embezzling more than $22,000 in premiums paid by a local business. Read more here.

Two other agents were charged with or pleaded guilty to similar misappropriation of premiums. Aymee Barbara Curbelo, of Weston, was a producer appointed by some of the best-known property carriers in Florida. She was accused of keeping auto insurance premiums and giving fake certificates of insurance to the insureds. Her license was revoked by the DFS.

Katlyn Dennis, of Palm Beach Gardens, also pleaded guilty to misappropriation of insurance funds. She received a sentence of five years’ probation, and her license was revoked.

One agency in Stuart, Florida, signed customers up for health plans without their consent, DFS said. Three other agents were disciplined for failing to report disciplinary actions by other jurisdictions, including California regulators, the federal Financial Industrial Regulatory Authority, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The full list of enforcement actions can be seen . The subjects of the actions are not listed by profession, but names or license numbers can be entered into the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings , to see the DFS disciplinary orders.
